Update on our first blog feedback in term one.

Now you can see the “How will this impact my students?” section below most post now and also strongly in my inquiry of students inquire. Also I have added the links to Tataiako on my category section on the rights. I have also worked with the steps outlined with my teaching inquiry.

 

The 1/4 Iron Maori

The 1/4 Iron Maori started with us leaving 9am Friday morning. On our journey we stopped at Tutahi church where we had a karakia and quick explanation of whats so significant about Tutahi.

So bit of knowledge was passed on to the students about Tutahi. Where back in world war 2 the soldiers who went to the church first  returned home and those who didn’t died in battle.

Following our karakia we travel through to Napier stoping in Dannivirke for dinner. We arrive to Napier about 4pm have whakatau at the school of William Colenso where we will be staying the night. Then head off to put our bikes in to the loading area and register.

All participants did well and I finished 3:33:49 seconds. Untill next year.

This event taught students. Resilience , hardwork, organisation and determination as such skills they all have within them.

Te Kahui Whetu 2018

Te Kahui Whetu started with a bang with practices happening most afternoons and mornings to get us prepared for the competition in mid term 3. It had us learning new waiata, moteatea and haka from our region of Taranaki.

This year the competition was held in Waitara. Where the host blew everyone away with their outstanding bracket and the closing of the ceremony.

Our bracket consisted of the following waiata and haka.

Basketball 7/8

Term 2 being as busy as it is I dedicated some time to train and coach the year 7/8 basketball team after they had been struggling in their league. I pick them up and see their progress sense last year. The skill level has increased immensely and are performing well throughout the term.

The games are on every Monday night ranging from 3:35pm to 6pm with full games of four 10minute quarters.  The games were hard and we seen some massive skill levels from all schools.

Unfortunately for our girls this season of basketball falls the same time as netball season so we have girls playing basketball exactly how they play netball.

Year 7/8 Netball

This Term I have also been involved in coaching the Year 7/8 netball on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with games on Saturday.

Fortunately for me Whaea Kate Paris had organised two teams in the late term 1. With this she also began to coach them and bring our school values into the teams immensely. Unfortunately Whaea Kate hasn’t had much experience coaching netball so asked me to help her out. Along my side we have Whaea Naomi who is a great player and only joined our ranks this term.

A few basic drills we realised that weren’t embedded in any form or way was to do with their warm up. So first thing was first organising some basic drills. We did single runner four corners and cut the cabbage following that.

Throughout the term we’ve seen major improvements in both teams. With the year 8 team only loosing two games thus far coming in to the end of the season.

Here are a few drills we have used during trainings.

students have learnt a great load of ethics and attitudes during the season.

  • They have learn’t to adapt their behaviours accordingly to whatever outcome the game takes.
  • To be respectful and show humility to other teams
  • To be great full for the opportunity to be involved in a sport this term

Taranaki Te Maunga

For our whole day course on the 6/4 we took our group along side with Matua Anaru whole day course to the great Taranaki Maunga.  Taking the students to experience the maunga is an opportunity for students to indulge in the landscape right in their back yard. For a lot of the students they had never even attempted the journey.

Once we arrived Matua Anaru did a quick karakia to bless our long journey ahead. Three hours later we reached the lodge and got a view students could only dream of.

A few things that raised our concerns during this haerenga that students only had just learnt was that.

  • Students fitness were lacking and some struggled with the climb.
  • Students understanding of how Taranaki come to be.
  • That Taranaki is a Volcano.

I learn’t to adapt to the students different fitness levels and adapt our pace accordingly.

To set different teachers in different places to keep students close to an adult.

Thursday 21/6

The day following our Variety show, Oh what a day this was. We had a wonderful display of Taonga Puhoro by Jerome Kavanagh who showed us the beauty of our national treasures. He played these instruments with love and passion and shared with us the knowledge that followed with each Taonga.

IMG_5829.JPGWith the help of South Taranaki District council we used this opportunity to give thanks to our students for all their hard efforts in the lead up and presentation of the Variety evening.

 

He played his photo instruments with not only his mouth but also his noise which really grappled the students attention.

The students learnt about their culture through musical instruments.

They experienced what items and taonga are native to New Zealand.

Following the Puhoro performance we spoilt the kids to the super rugby game that was being held in Hawera that afternoon taking two bus loads full of kids and teachers.

It was good performance by both sides and fortunately the hurricanes got up in a high scoring match 43 – 38. The kids loved the experience and got to get some photos with their favourite rugby players as the fields opened up after the game.

What a way to congratulate our students on all their current hard work throughout not only this term but this year.

Miniball

Miniball has been going on all through term 2 this year. 10 weeks of basketball every Wednesday night for the Year 5/6.

With Darren Pullen doing an excellent job in sports co-ordinator and Hiring the year 5/6 teacher working together with them to give the children the opportunity to participate in miniball.

 

As we can see above the co-ordination and clear outline for miniball makes our jobs a whole lot easier.

Trainings were during lunch times and only teaching them the complete basics from dribbling and how to shoot properly. Their skills are great and developed extremely well throughout the term. For example we had students who could not get a goal in or could not simply dribble the ball to half way. Now coming towards the end of the term they have been all able to get goals and get across half way by dribbling the ball themselves.

 

We learnt some great values during this term.

Students learnt to respect each other and that each individual brings their own sets of skills to the team.

To learning how to adapt to refs and other players to better themselves.

Things to work on for next time.

  • Start training earlier in the term
  • Setting guidelines and rules about behaviour on the court.

  • Communication between teachers and staff

Rippa Rugby – 7 / 8

Rippa rugby happened on the 27/06/2018. Fortunately for us we were able to take two teams through to New Plymouth for the tournament. We had 10 girls for their team and 10 boys for their team.

A few problems we faced early in the morning was the organisation of vehicles.

  • With 20 kids and only one extra van for the students we were stumped for seats.

We fortunately had enough drivers but yet not enough vehicles. So with some quick thinking we were able to use a 7 seater vehicle and a 5 seater giving us just enough space for the students.

Arriving late however set both teams behind by one game making us default the first.

As above it was a huge day and unfortunately for us missing the first game set us behind and we weren’t able to secure a spot in the finals or semis.

 

To reflect we could’ve organised the vehicles better to be more punctual.

Students – Learnt a lot with their attitudes.

In the first game they were extremely disorginised and their attitudes were out of place.  A little reminder of our school values set them accordingly and their attitudes     changed and went well throughout the day.

They learnt a lot of lessons such as managing themselves. Learning to adapt when changes happened.

Inquiry Launch Term 2

For inquiry this term our main focus is Culture.

“Culture is the widening of the mind.” With this in mind we took a morn modern approach I would say and focused on multiple cultures that not only derive from ethnicities but stretch as far as sports and games for example. There were 14 rooms of inquiry launch which we had a very good rotational system that provided each student the opportunity to experience the culture.

From Zendo kai to American Culture the day was a great experience.

During the Launch me and Darren were involved in the same group and captured games as our main focus of our inquiry.

We focused on trying to express bored games from chess to more physically active games like hopscotch and handball.

 

We had imagery to support the culture and beginning of the game. The kids enjoyed the thinking behind the games as they generally play these without knowing where they originated from.

 

Student Voice

Student Voice is a large part of understanding not only what our students like to learn also what knowledge they have previously obtained.

Here is a general overview of the student voice form for art for the students to complete to generalise what we should study during term 2.

 

From these questions we found that the results pointed towards Landscape for genre of art and then painting for the type of medium they wished to pursue.

At first I had Portraits detailed in as term twos inquiry for art and working with facial features etc. With principles of pencil and mixed media involved.Screen Shot 2018-06-28 at 3.41.48 PM.png

 

So with this information received from the student voice I based Terms twos activities accordingly to aid in the changes and wishes of the students learning.

Term 3 is a completely new story as our students decided if they wish to pursue art again for the next two terms or go over to wood work or vice versa. This in mind I throughly think the students enjoyed this terms activities as they feel as though they had a large portion of input to their learning.

Attitude with Alenzo

 

Alenzo a key speaker from attitude New Zealand attend our school on Tuesday 12th June.  Thanks to Anaru for organising such a wonderful speaker to come in and share his experiences and trying to make a difference in our students lives.

Attitude is dedicated to equipping teenagers with the information and skills they need to negotiate the adolescent years and build meaningful lives. The resources, based on credible research and linked to the health curriculum, give young people strategies for solving problems, handling stress, building resilience and negotiating relationships.

We choose the topics. In the morning from 9 – 10 we had our year 9 – 10s with the guest speaker who spoke about the awkward sexual encounters they may have to over come or maybe going through at the moment. From 10 – 11 we had our seniors students with Alenzo, who spoke to them about resilience and how to overcome some obstacles they may face. A key factor within this hour was focused on four main things,

The four great choices to making a better life. One was to “find  your strengths” – Find what your good at, whatever that maybe. Secondly was to “find Meaning” – find a reason and meaning to live, to experience life, to make life worth while. Thirdly was to “find your passion” –  find what makes you happy and something that your passionate about doing. Something where materials and peoples opinions don’t matter. Lastly there was “find a cause” – where he expresses to find a cause to your passion a reason.

How will this develop my students learning?

Having Alenzo come to speak to the students will hopefully bring some engagement and some focus to them on what they can do to make their lives better. Also will help students make better choices with their learning and opportunities here at Patea Area School.

Following the previous observation this one really reflects on how well I’ve adapted my teaching accordingly.

This class however is well smaller so I could actively engage each and every student.

Things I still need to work on.

Time management and deadlines for these particular students.

Expressing te importants on meeting these as-well.

Showing relevance on why we not only complete these task but why meeting these are so important as well.

Sharing relevance in to why we are learning this etc.

Creating better structure with these students to keep them engaged through the whole period.

Here is a clear pester observation from term one. I reflected highly on this as it was a difficult lesson. Not only were we a few weeks in the school term students were still in Holiday mode and it showed.

From here I decided to go back to some class room structure and adapt lessons accordingly. From Karakia and clear expectations of learning intentions of this period through the coming weeks.

“Some students engaged in off-task activities”. These were the students I wanted to focus on so what I did was

A. identifying students working on off-task activities.

B. Move students to a more practical workspace.

C. Ask questions to find out what they didn’t understand.

 

Feast OR Famine

The Feast or Famine night was held on the evening of March the 23rd.

This evening was a great initiative from our Principle to raise digital fluency within our community. Although we may use technology all throughout our classrooms its still extremely difficult for the community to use internet at home as the cost of it is ridiculous. For example if you were a low income family living in Whanganui you may only have to pay $49 for you unlimited wifi a month were here at Patea your still asked to pay $99 a month. With five kids at home and food to put on the table its an overwhelming amount to ask for and kids suffer the opportunities to excel and learn at home with technology because of this.

It was also surrounding our term one inquiry of the “8 global challenges.”

The evening was a great gabble on weather you would receive a feast or a famine. So for $20 and on a table of ten you all drew out a specific card which in-tilted  you to a meal. The meal was either a feast or a meal for the famine. The feast meal was a delicious chicken salad or you had a vegetarian option of eggplant. The Famine meal however was a bowl of rice. A delicious bowl of rice I may add.

The night was an extremely great turnout of friends and colleagues. We had about 200+ people attend the evenings function and was without a doubt a very successful evening.

I had the honours of creating the Posters and tickets for the event.

The night was full of laughter and knowledge shared throughout the evening. We had some great speeches from students about their inquiry around third world countries and how this can help everyone understand a little bit more about the struggle. Here are just a few snaps of the night.

  • Great delivery and service of the food.
  • The projector and video went well and was smooth sailing.
  • Good company and the people who set up did an amazing job

  • Counting of seats and tables.
  • organising of the seating arrangements

 

All in all however was a great night not only for the school but also the community!

Inquiry Term 2

11 / 04/ 2018

Katrina Fraser hit us with next terms inquiry which revolves around culture.

“Culture is the widening of the mind and spirit.”

With this in the background of our mind we were all asked to participate in an activity which we get to express our futures, beliefs and messages we were bought up. The importance of this activity was to share with each other and understand how many cultures we have in the room with us today.

A key message from this was that culture go’s deep for each and everyone of us. To understand our own culture is a key to expressing this to the children.

Food , Fashion, Music, Dance, Visual Art, Drama, Sport, Countries, science & technology, geography , literature, and rituals are just apart of some ideas for our children interest.

These were some ideas surrounding the presentation process of next terms inquiry.

Personally I haven’t decided on which culture I wish to present as taster for next term, I’m drawn between expressing dance maybe like break dancing culture to stomping etc to express the difference of understanding of culture. What to do? what to do? With excitement fulfilling my body no doubt the right presentation of culture will come to me all in good time.

Can’t wait to see the outcome of this inquiry bring on term 2!

 

Digital Fluency PD – 28/02/2018

Whaea Marea and Matua Vince joined us once again from Ngati Ruanui. We started with a great Kahoot quiz between the staff.

I come second 😏.

Following this we went through an App called Aurasma. Here you can see the involvement of all the staff members getting involved.

Ways to use this app – Year books, speeches, responses to txt.

Overall it’s a augmented video that plays from a picture. We have great ways to expose this throughout classrooms. You can even only have audio playing so those who maybe to shy to record them selfs can just record their voices over their pictures.
